Alice "Milly" Mildred Shipley

February 16, 1927 ~ June 27, 2017 (age 90) 90 Years Old


       Alice Mildred “Milly” Shipley of Westminster passed away at 8:15 am on June 27th, 2017.  She was born on February 16, 1927 near Westminster, the daughter of Paul and Laura Marea Royer Shipley. Her grandfather, Dr. Daniel F. Shipley, officiated at her birth.

       She earned a Bachelor’s degree from Western Maryland College, now McDaniel College, and a Master’s degree in history from University of Maryland.   Dedicated to education, she taught history in Westminster middle and high schools for 37 years.

       She was a lifelong member of Westminster United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher, secretary of the Official Board, member of the Administrative Board, president of the United Methodist Women and chair or member of various committees. She was the church librarian and a graduate of all four Disciple Classes.

       Always involved in history, she was a life member and volunteer of the Historical Society of Carroll County   She was involved in writing the book “The First 150 Years” to celebrate our county’s birth.  She was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.   Mildred was very active and a past officer in the organization, the Shipleys of Maryland.

       True to her family roots, Mildred was a fierce advocate of preserving the beautiful farm land of Carroll County.  She was a member of the Carroll County Land Trust and a supporter of the County Agricultural Center. 

       Much adored by her family, her home served as an inn for local and visiting family members.  She also helped to care for older members of the family when they became ill in their later years.

       She is survived by her brother and sister in law Daniel F. and Eleanor Galt Shipley; nieces and nephews, Ann and Roger Hicks, Steven Shipley, Peggy and Buck Harrison, Betsy and David Lower, Jon and Maria Shipley and Richard Shipley; great nieces and nephews: Todd Hicks and Hsin-I Cheng, Laura and David Heistuman, Jim and John Lower, Becky and Kris Harrison, Thomas and Margo Shipley, Charlene, Sebastian, and Eric Shipley, Christoph and Kara Shipley and Kayla and Louis Brotherton; great, great nieces, Kaila and Jodi Heistuman, Beryl Shipley, and a great, great nephew, Aaron Hicks.  She was preceded in death by her sister, Louise Shipley Fillion, brother Paul Royer Shipley, sister-in-law, Mary Ann (Smith) Shipley and niece Danielle Shipley.

       A celebration of her life will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, July 15th at the Westminster United Methodist Church, 162 E. Main Street, Westminster, with her pastor, Reverend Malcolm Stranathan, officiating. Burial will follow in Westminster Cemetery.
