        Charles Henry Smith, 93, of Taneytown, MD, passed away peacefully at Hanover Hospital in Hanover, PA, on Wednesday, April 5, 2017.  Born January 3, 1924 in Cumberland, MD, he was the son of the late William Henry and Camellia (Bond) Smith.  He was the devoted husband of the late Alberta Ruth (Canfield) Smith, to whom he was married for 66 years. 

        Charles was a graduate of Allegheny High School in Cumberland.  He was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, serving 3 years during World War II as an Aviation Ordinanceman, Petty Officer 1st Class.  He was employed by C&P Telephone Company for 32 years, working his way up from Lineman to Plant Manager, from Cumberland to Baltimore.  He was a life-long member of the Lutheran faith, serving on church councils as president at St. Luke’s in Cumberland and Trinity in Taneytown.  He also served on many different church committees, and taught adult Sunday School classes.  He was a member of American Legion Hesson-Snider Post #120 in Taneytown.  Charles was also a member of the Free Masons, Monocacy Lodge #203, Boumi Temple, and the Western Maryland Shrine Club.  He was a Scout Master for Troop 1 in Cumberland, and supported his sons in scouting.  In his younger years, he enjoyed playing tennis, softball, football, and golf.  He also enjoyed traveling, gardening, playing bridge, hunting, and fishing, and was an active member of the Taneytown Rod and Gun Club.  He loved to square-dance, and was a member of the Woodsboro Dance Club and the Hanover Pacers Square-Dance Club.  After retirement, he owned and operated several businesses, including small engine repair, Taneytown Tire, Inc., and beer and wine-making supply sales, all while continuing to manage the family farm.   

        Surviving are sons, Mark W. Smith of Taneytown, and Charles “Rod” Smith and fiance Kay Hefner, of Taneytown; grandson, Mark W. Smith II and wife Kathy of Littlestown, PA; great-grandchildren, Bailey Ann and Hunter Smith; and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by brother, William Smith.

        A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 10, 2017 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 38 W. Baltimore St., Taneytown, MD, 21787, with Pastor Cristopher Frigm officiating.  Interment will follow in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.  The family will receive friends, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME, 136 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown, MD, and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday at the church.

        In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church at the above address.
