Elmer “Sonny” Sweeny, Jr., 80, of Thurmont, MD passed away on Monday, June 26, 2017 at St. Joseph’s Ministries in Emmitsburg, MD surrounded by his loving family. Born January 30, 1937 in Thurmont, MD, he was the son of the late Elmer and Blanche Minnie (Welch) Sweeney, Sr.  He was the husband of the late Patricia Cecilia (Kelly) Sweeney, to whom he was married for 56 years.

          Sonny was a pipe layer and worked for the Phoenix Co. in Virginia and W. F. Wilson in Ellicott City, MD for nearly 40 years.  He enjoyed hunting, camping, cooking, doing yard work and going to McDonald’s and Wendy’s in Thurmont.  He especially loved spending time with his family.   

          He is survived by 2 sons, Dennis Sweeney and wife Dawn, and Kenneth Sweeney and wife Carol; 3 daughters, Brenda Sweeney Williams, Wanda Peomroy and husband Kenneth, and Rhonda Sweeney Boggs, all of Thurmont; 5 brothers, Donnie Sweeney and wife Pat of Waynesboro, PA, John Sweeney and wife Patty, Ken Sweeney and wife Donna, Joe Sweeney and wife Judy, and Bern Sweeney and wife Terry; 2 sisters, Ruth Wilhide, and Joy Lookingbill and husband Bob all of Thurmont; 10 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.  Sonny is also remembered by special friends, Jim and Joan Leo of Thurmont.  He was predeceased by sisters, Betty Six and Blanche Toms; and brothers-in-law, Bob Wilhide and George Six.  Sonny’s family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the nurses and staff of St. Joseph’s Ministries for their kind and loving care.       

          A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 29, 2017 at MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME, 210 W. Main St., Emmitsburg, MD with the Reverend Thomas J. Hudson, OPA officiating.  Interment will follow at New St. Joseph Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
