SHIRLEY BUCHANAN HOOFNAGLE, 86, of Woodbine, MD, passed away on October 28, 2017, from complications of Alzheimer’s. She was born in Baltimore, MD, on August 10, 1931, and was the daughter of Beatrice (Gaeng) Buchanan, and James B. Buchanan, (both deceased) and the sister of Janet B. Facenda, of Portsmouth, VA, and Bertha B. Russo (deceased). Shirley was the loving wife of J. Bruce Hoofnagle who survives her. She is also survived by her loving children Elizabeth C. Volski (Al), Karen A. Steele (Richard), Stephanie L. Zeitler (Robert), Joseph B. Hoofnagle, III (Patricia), and Jennifer L. Smith (Cecil). She is further survived by her grandchildren Alison Hamer, Brooke Kanaskie, Brian Steele, Blaire Andes, Evan Volski, Jessica Burke, and Michael Steele, and her great grandchildren Raegan and Ryder Kanaskie, Jacob and Adelaide Hamer, Oliver Andes, and Mason Burke.

Shirley and her husband graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy (Portsmouth, VA) in 1948, and were married at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Portsmouth on December 27, 1951.

Shirley attended Goucher University and worked at Mccormick Spice and Applied Physics Lab of Johns Hopkins.  She was an active swimmer, an avid reader and expressed artistic talents from childhood through her life in drawing, painting and quilting.
