Very sad to learn of the passing of Mr. Schafer. He was my "cool" teacher back in 1970-71 and later years taught my sons. Always a nice guy. May the love of friends surround you with comfort, bring you peace and help heal your heart. Your family will remain in my prayers.

I got to know Mr. Schafer in tenth grade when he was my history teacher. Mr. Schafer stoked my interest in politics and the political process. I spent 3 years in Maryland Model Legislature (Youth in Government) which Mr. Schafer served as the advisor. We had some wonderful times throughout those years and during our annual trip to Annapolis. Then in my senior year, we had enough students to take AP U.S. History and Mr. Schafer taught the course. I believe it was the first time that he had to prep this class and you could tell how hard he was working. In the end, I got a “5” on my exam and it was definitely due to Mr. Schafer. Beyond the academics, Mr. Schafer’s sense of humor was second to none. He often shared amazing stories, told hilarious jokes and always made everyone feel welcome. Over the last few years, I have enjoyed talking with Mr. Schafer about travel and politics. Two years ago, Ben Page and I invited Mr. Schafer to a Maryland tailgate and football game and he joined. We truly had a great time. Mr. Schafer got to see us as adults and we got to see him as a friend. Mr. Schafer, thank you for everything you have given to me and all of your former students. You will truly, truly, be missed.

So very sorry for your loss. I met Jim through my cousin Judy and he was a trenendous, soft-spoken, compassionate man. The world is so much better for having had Jim in it.

I am very sorry about the loss of your father and step-father, Words cannot express the pain you may feel at this time. The God of all comfort understand your pain and is near those brokenhearted and crushed. He promise to be of comfort to you at this difficult time. Psalms 34:18 and 2 Corinthians 1:3,4 May your hearts find peace and comfort from the support all around you.

My heart hurt this morning as I received the news that Jim has left this frail existence. My husband and I will fondly remember he and Judy dancing across the floor, laughing and loving every second of life. We met together for an hour or two a week for several weeks, and we quickly came to learn that his family was his life. He once told me that he didn't plan to leave money or possessions for his loved ones, because he wanted to use those things up to create experiences and memories with them. I know he loved those experiences, too. He spoke often of cruises and trips and good times with those most important to him in this life, especially his children, his grandchildren, and his sweet Judy. I pray that you can feel that love and that those memories fill the void that must surely be left in your hearts right now. He will be missed. Bless you all!

I had the privilege to work with Jim 15 years at Catoctin. I am proud to say we became good friends and I miss the great conversations we shared over the years. We enjoyed wonderful times at the beach and fishing trips together on the Bay. He loved life and was dedicated to his family.
He will be missed but the wonderful memories will remain...

I am SO very sorry to learn of Jim's passing. I had the privilege of working with Jim at Catoctin High School in the late 70's as a Teacher's Aide for the Social Studies Department. He was always a true gentleman.....watching him interact with his students helped me a great deal when I became a teacher for FCPS. Jim was always supportive, encouraging, and he was a big part of the reason I continued to teach for 39 years in Frederick County. He has touched so many lives. He will be missed by all.

How fortunate for me; That once in my lifetime I was lucky enough to have a Social Studies teacher, who inspired me, respected me, treated me like a friend and remembered my name every time our paths crossed within the 42 years after I graduated from high school. His quiet manner and smile remained the same and I am privileged to be able to call him my friend. Mr. Schafer is that person for me. Mr. Schafer is what teaching and being teacher is all about.
To Stephen and Alison, and grandchildren: My prayers are with you!
