Sister Mary Hemler Obituary

Sister Mary Clement (June Jeter) Hemler, age 86, died at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg, Maryland on December 22, 2018. She was born on June 24, 1932 in Reisterstown, Maryland, one of eight children born to Clement Dominic and Mary Louise (Sanford) Hemler.

Sister Mary Clement joined the Daughters of Charity on December 18, 1950 in Emmitsburg, Maryland.  After a period of formation, she was missioned to teach at Our Lady of Lourdes School in Utica, New York (1952-1955).  Following this, she began her nursing studies, first at St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg and then at Providence Hospital in Washington, DC (1955-1958).  Her next mission was to St. Vincent Hospital in Bridgeport, Connecticut to serve as a Nurse Supervisor (1958-1967).   After this assignment, she studied for her Master’s Degree at Catholic University while living at Seton House of Studies in Washington, DC (1967-1969).   Sister Mary Clement then served at DePaul Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia as a Nurse Supervisor (1969-1973) and then at St. Vincent Medical Center in Jacksonville, Florida as a Director of Nursing (1973-1974). In 1974 she was missioned to St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore as Assistant Administrator in Nursing (1974-1986).  Her next assignment was to Sacred Heart Hospital as a Patient Visitor (1986-1987) and following this, to Sacred Heart Hospital in Cumberland, Maryland as Vice President of Nursing Services (1974-1986).  From there, Sister Mary Clement returned to Emmitsburg to serve in Villa St. Michael as Nurse and Instructor (1988-1994).  Her next mission was St. Ann’s Infant Home in Hyattsville, Maryland where she also served as a Nurse (1994-1999). From there she went to St. Vincent Medical Center in Jacksonville, Florida as Vincentian Coordinator (1999-2001).   In 2001 she returned to nursing at St. Ann’s Center for Children, Youth, and Families in Hyattsville (2001-2016).  In 2016, Sister Mary Clement was missioned to Villa St. Michael where she served in the Ministry of Prayer until her death.   

Sister Mary Clement earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing Education in 1958 from Catholic University of America in Washington, DC and a Masters in Nursing Service Administration in 1969, also from Catholic University.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her twin brother Dick, and four other siblings.   She is survived by her sisters, Margaret Wirts and Ethel Doe, nieces and nephews, and her sisters in Community.   

A wake service will be held on Friday, December 28 at 7:00 pm in the Villa Chapel in Emmitsburg.   A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on December 29 at 11:00 am in the Basilica of the National Shrine of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, followed by burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery.   

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Sister Mary Clement’s name to the Daughters of Charity, 4330 Olive Street, Saint Louis, Missouri  63108.
