Susan Sanders Obituary

Susan Elaine Sanders, 76, life-long resident of Emmitsburg, MD, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 28, 2018 on the family farm surrounded by her loving family.

Born on May 27, 1941 in Emmitsburg, MD she was the daughter of the late John E. McGlaughlin and Ethel E. (Miller) McGlaughlin Mehring.  She was the wife of the late James H. Sanders who predeceased her on March 18, 1994.

Susan was a life-long member of Elias Lutheran Church in Emmitsburg where she was a former Sunday School Teacher and sang on the choirs since her youth.  Susan graduated from Emmitsburg High School in 1959 where she was active in sports and a member of various school organizations.  She held dear the friendships she made in high school and was a member of the Emmitsburg H.S. Alumni Association.  She was currently a member of the Emmitsburg Memorial Cemetery Committee, Thurmont and Emmitsburg Community Show Committee and the Thurmont Grange.  She was a past member of the Emmitsburg Historical Society, and enjoyed bowling for many years.  Susan was an avid Bingo player, enjoyed going to auctions, and traveling.  She visited 49 of the 50 states during her adventures.  She was active in daily farm life along with her husband Jimmy from the day they were married.  Upon retirement from the farm Susan worked in dining service at Mount St. Mary’s University, and with Yinglings Auction.  She was a homemaker, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. 

She is survived by her daughters, Denise Valentine and husband Michael of Emmitsburg and Allyson Rohrbaugh and husband Herbert, Jr. of Emmitsburg; grandchildren, Amanda Dennis and husband Paul, Jessica Derr and husband Andrew, Samantha Valentine and fiancée Tyler Fitzwater, Garrett Rohrbaugh and fiancée Ericka Norfolk, and Parker Rohrbaugh; great-grandchildren, Patrick Venables, Bryce Dennis, and Jet Derr; brothers, John D. McGlaughlin of Gettysburg, PA and Dennis M. McGlaughlin, Sr. of Emmitsburg; brother-in-law, Wayne E. Sanders of Emmitsburg; many nieces and nephews; and companion of many years, Bob Brown of Fairfield, PA.

She was predeceased by sisters-in-law, Doris McGlaughlin and Patty McGlaughlin; and by brother-in-law, David A. Sanders, Sr.   

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at Elias Lutheran Church, 100 W. North Ave., Emmitsburg with Pastor Jon Greenstone officiating assisted by Rev. James M. Russell.  Burial will follow in Emmitsburg Memorial Cemetery.  The family will receive friends on Monday, April 2nd from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Elias Lutheran Church and on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME in Emmitsburg, MD.   In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either, Elias Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 465, Emmitsburg, MD  21727, Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box 1799, Frederick, MD  21702, or to the Emmitsburg Ambulance Company, 17701 Creamery Rd., Emmitsburg, MD  21727.
