Ann Teresa (Hobbs) Welty, 90, of Thurmont, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 27, 2026. Born on October 15, 1935, in Emmitsburg, Maryland, Ann shared her birthday with her late husband, Bernard Welty. Bernard was born in 1923, and together they were united in marriage on December 31, 1960, a partnership rooted in faith, devotion, hard work and family. Ann was the daughter of the late Eva Stouter Hobbs and Maurice Hobbs. She was predeceased by her husband, Bernard, and her brothers, Benjamin Hobbs and John Hobbs. She is survived by her three children: David Bernard Welty and his wife, Angie Orndorff Welty; Catherine A. Welty Miller and her husband, Donald F. Miller, Jr.; and Kevin Domonic Welty and his wife, Lori Feinglas Welty. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Tyson Miller, Michael Welty (and his wife Casey Osborne Welty), Patrick Welty, Ava Welty, and Mia Welty, and a cherished great-grandmother to Mason Welty, Michael Welty, Jr., and Benjamin Welty. Ann is also survived by her siblings Joan Little, Harry Hobbs, Gene Hobbs, Feme Sauble, Greg Hobbs, Simon Hobbs, and Ava Murray, who remained a treasured part of her life.
Ann is also survived by her sister-in-law, Barbara Welty Martin, who was a great blessing to Ann with her love, care and friendship.
Born and raised on Creamery Road in Emmitsburg, Maryland, Ann grew up in a farming family where hard work and helping others were simply part of daily life. She carried that spirit with her always. Ann was no stranger to work and was happiest when she was busy, cooking for family, canning vegetables, tending her garden, or quietly caring for someone in need. She began her career at St. Joseph’s Provincial House in the Marian Center and later served as a switchboard operator at the Provincial House. She and Bernard made their home for many years on Harney Road before she later moved to Thurmont to live with her daughter Catherine and son-in-law Donald. Ann enjoyed her time at the Thurmont Senior Center, where she enjoyed the camaraderie of her friends and the fun in exercise class.
Ann also enjoyed playing cards with dear friends Jenna Ott, Bessie, Barbara Martin, and Pat Carson.
Her later years were brightened by the companionship and kindness of her friend Danny Wachter. Through Danny, Ann’s life was a fun adventure, with many trips to hear live music and going out for dinner. Such fun made Ann young again!
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Marilyn Worsham for their many outings and adventures, and to Mary Enright and Mel Stup and Vickie Grinder and Tammy Pimentel for their faithful visits, love and support during the past six months. Ann held a deep devotion to the Miraculous Medal and was a faithful, lifelong Catholic. Her faith guided her life and sustained her through every season.
Above all, Ann lived her life in the greatest form of honor, choosing kindness, care, and love in her daily actions. She had a gentle way about her that made each person feel special and seen. As a Mother and Grandmother, she was a steady and quiet strength whose unwavering love shaped her family in lasting ways. What her family wants most remembered is her kindness and her faith, the way she gave of herself so freely and how very special she was to each one of us. She will be deeply and profoundly missed.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Emmitsburg, Maryland. Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
