Barbara Jean Woodyard Moals, a resident of Carroll Lutheran Village Health Care Center of Westminster, Maryland, affectionately known by all who loved her as “Jeannie” peacefully gained her wings on March 30, 2026, at 81 years of age.

Born on October 5, 1944, Jeannie was the fourth of fourteen children of the late David Elick and the late Mamie Thelma (Warfield) Woodyard. Raised in a close-knit family in New Windsor, Maryland, she graduated from Robert Moton High School in Westminster, Maryland.

Jeannie united in marriage to the late Louis Russell Moals, Sr. on October 20, 1962. While still newlywed, she and her husband took on the role of guardians for five of her younger siblings after their mother’s untimely passing in 1969. Then shortly after welcoming their son Louis Russell Moals, Jr., and later her daughter Shavon was added to the fold. Jeannie dedicated herself to caring for her family, a commitment that became her work and passion in life. Jeannie was the heart of her family. In raising her younger siblings, her own two children, as well as nieces and nephews, her home was always open to anyone in need. Many found comfort, warmth, and a nutritious meal within her doors. Jeannie’s home became the family’s gathering place, especially as she also cared for the patriarch until his passing. Though she had a tough exterior, her hearty and infectious laugh brought joy to all who knew her.

Jeannie was skilled with her hands. She was employed at the shoe factory on Main Street in Westminster until it closed and later retired from Gould Industries after 20 years of dedicated service. Jeannie had a passion for sewing and became the community seamstress. When prom or wedding season came around, there was surely a design by BJM. She loved her professional sewing machines, which were too complex for most, and delighted in creating custom pieces for anyone who asked. Just tell her want you had in mind and those three sewing machines would start to hum.

Raised in a Christian household, Jeannie sang in the children’s choir at Gospel Spreading Church of God in Union Bridge, Maryland, alongside her siblings. She later joined Union Memorial Baptist Church and immediately became a member of the choir. Renowned for her strong, distinctive second alto voice, Jeannie honed her craft with the guidance of a gifted pianist the late Mr. Marvin Cornish Sr. while she a member of Johnsville United Methodist Church in Eldersburg, Maryland. Jeannie cherished her church family and could be found either singing in the choir loft or serving in the kitchen.

Jeannie is survived by her son, Louis Russell Moals, Jr. of Lincoln, NE; granddaughter, Sierra (Brian) Lloyd II; great-grandsons, Jameson and Gabriel Lloyd; siblings Leona (Charles) Jefferson, Paulette Johnson of Westminster, MD, Kristen (Rommie) Pettaway of Wilson, NC, Edgar (Virginia) and Curtis Woodyard of Frederick, MD, Kirdell Woodyard of Hagerstown, MD, and Bruce (Cynthia) Woodyard of Westminster, MD; sister-in-law, Debra Woodyard; brother-in-law, John Henry Morris, both of Frederick, MD; more than 50 nieces and nephews, over 150 grandnieces and grandnephews, two aunts, and a host of other relatives, friends, and neighbors.

Jeannie has been joyfully reunited with her loved ones who preceded her in Glory, including both parents, her daughter Shavon, her brothers David, James, and Marlowe, as well as her sisters Anna, Ernestine, and Verla. The warmth and kindness that Jeannie shared will continue to inspire everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. Her loved ones, family, friends, and community will always hold her memory close to their hearts.
