Charles Michael Dillon, III, age 92, of Emmitsburg, MD, died Wednesday, July 17, 2024, surrounded by family. Born August 19, 1931 in Queens, NY, he was the son of the late Charles Michael Dillon, Jr. and Agnes (DeWitt) Dillon. He was the beloved husband of the late Shirley (Bensinger) Dillon, his wife of 50 years prior to her passing in 2008.
During his long life, Chuck, as he was known, served his family, country and community. He served with distinction as a “tin can” sailor aboard the destroyer, the USS John Hood, during the Korean War and later would participate in many Naval reunions honoring his shipmates-in-arms.
After leaving the Navy, he would attend Mount Saint Mary’s college in Emmitsburg obtaining a Masters in Business Administration and later going on to teach courses in Marketing and Economics. As a professional, he worked for the Elevator/Escalator division of Westinghouse (later Schindler) in Gettysburg PA participating in projects across the nation including the Sears Tower in Chicago.
As a man of faith, he attended St. Joseph’s Church in Emmitsburg and served in various layman capacities including on the parish council and as a eucharistic minister. His door was always open to the priests of St. Joes, and many found welcome there. He was a Boy Scout leader and supporter of Mother Seton School where he could be found manning the pit beef stand during their annual carnival.
As a family man, he raised his children well, always making time for discussion at dinner as well as many cherished get togethers especially during the holidays. He loved reading, particularly history and World War II, the music of Willie Nelson and enjoying a good cigar and drink while discussing the events of the day. He was a passionate fan of the Dodgers and Washington football.
Chuck had a love of travel. All his children fondly remember a trip the family took across the USA in a VW bus in the 70’s as well as many summers spent on the beaches of Delaware. Later in life he travelled the world including Europe, the Far East and the Holy Land. With a quick wit and curiosity, he made easy conversation with all he encountered. He is much loved and will be sorely missed.
