Charles Calvin Snyder Jr. (April 30, 1931 – February 4, 2026), known as Bud to his siblings, Charlie to friends, and Chuck to his children, passed away at Bridging Life / Dove House after a brief illness.
Born in Union Bridge, Charlie moved to the Hamilton neighborhood of Baltimore in the 1940s. As a teenager, he worked at a local soda fountain, graduated from Poly High School, and spent a summer driving a Good Humor truck. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving four years as an airplane mechanic, primarily in the Azores.
After his service, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Arts and Education from the University of Maryland. He married his childhood sweetheart and returned to Carroll County to raise his family. Except for a dedicated period in the 1980s serving with the Peace Corps in Belize, he spent the remainder of his life in Carroll County.
Charlie credited his Aunt Meme with teaching him the “right way to do things,” a lesson that helped him cultivate a philosophy of accepting people on their own terms. He held a deep respect for other cultures and often remarked that there was much to learn from how others lived. For most of his career, Charlie was a self-employed owner of full-service gas stations. Many family members worked alongside him, developing a strong work ethic under his guidance.
An enthusiast of painting and restoration, Charlie had a lifelong passion for cars and airplanes. He loved flying and frequently took family and friends on guided tours of the Air and Space Museum near Dulles. Despite his many experiences, Charlie considered himself a humble, simple man.
He was preceded in death by his wife, June B. Snyder; his parents, Charles C. Snyder Sr. and Anne Collins née Smith; his brother, Harry L. Snyder; and his sister, Elizabeth (Betsy) Fisher. He is survived by his children, Sally J. Snyder and Edward C. Snyder, both of Taneytown; his brother, John P. Snyder and wife Cindy of Miami, FL; his sister, Frances S. McGuire of Ocean Pines, MD; his sister-in-law, Verna Snyder; and many beloved nieces and nephews, neighbors and friends.
Funeral services will be held at the MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME, WESTMINSTER, MD. Visitations will take place on Wednesday, February 11, at 2-4pm and again from 6-8pm. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 12, at 10:00 AM at the Funeral Home, followed by interment at Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
