Dorothy M. Shindle was born May 10, 1929, in Claytonville, IL to Elsie (Showalter) and the Reverend Ira Wm. Shindle but grew up in various Maryland communities where her father served as a Methodist Minister. A 1946 graduate of Clarksville High School in Howard County, MD, she continued her education at Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College) with a BA in 1950, and later at Johns Hopkins University with a MS equivalent.
Beginning a teaching career at Thurmont High School, she intended to become a high school Latin teacher but was assigned to teach Mathematics in combination with Latin and gradually shifted her attention to that field. Most of her career was with the Baltimore County Public Schools, especially Sudbrook Junior High and Milford Mill Senior High School, from which she retired as Chair of the Math Faculty.
While teaching, she also served as a church organist. When her organ instructor, the eclectic Edward O’Dell, formed the International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society for collectors and scholars of these intricately painted works of fine art, she agreed to serve as Treasurer though she then knew little about the subject. In this position she made connections with members and travelled to the group’s annual conventions the world over for the next 40 years.
Active in the United Methodist Church, she served on the Boards of the United Methodist Historical Society of the Baltimore-Washington Conference, and of the historic Strawbridge Shrine Association for which she was Treasurer for many years.
Though without children of her own, “Aunt Dorothy” was something of a matriarch to her parent’s extended family. She is survived by sister, Evelyn Inmon of Frederick, brothers Wm. Richard Shindle of Westminster, and Robert Shindle of Sykesville; nieces Debra Inmon of Middletown, Cathy and husband Kevin Inman of Frederick; nephews Randall Inmon of Frederick, Robert Wm. Shindle of Westminster; grandniece Bethany and husband Zachary Patterson of Lititz, PA.; and grandnephew Devin Inman of Frederick.
The family will receive friends from 1 – 2 p.m. on Monday, April 11, 2022, at MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME, P.A., 91 Willis Street, Westminster, MD 21157, with a memorial service to follow. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dorothy’s name to Strawbridge Shrine Association, 2200 St. Paul Street, Baltimore, MD 21218.
