Edith “Edie” Mae (Cubbage) Thomas, age 72, of Taneytown, MD, died Saturday, March 4, 2023, surrounded by her family and friends, after an extended illness. Born in Westminster, she was the daughter of the late Garland Lee Cubbage Sr. and Elizabeth “Diddie” Jane Cubbage. She was wife of the late William “Bill” L. Thomas Jr.
Edie was a 1968 graduate of Westminster High School. She was no stranger to hard work. As a young adult, Edie worked in the office for her parents’ garbage business, G.L. Cubbage Refuse Service. After she and Bill married in 1972, together, they owned and operated 3 successful businesses; a trucking company, a trash removal company and a lawn and garden business. In October of 1985, she took a position at Tevis Oil. Edie thrived at Tevis Oil and absolutely loved work and her work family. She always spoke of her work family with such admiration and loyalty. Edie retired from Tevis Oil in March 2021.
Edie always had a good work ethic that was passed down from her father. She always cherished moments with her family and friends. She loved her farmhouse on Conover Road as well as volunteering at the Harney Carnival and Harney VFW. Edie loved her dog Domino, feeding stray cats, coffee from Sheetz, flower gardening. She loved drives with Bill in her Corvair, sitting on the front porch rocking chairs. She was always mesmerized by the mountains and sharing stories.
She is survived by her daughter Amy Coca of Taneytown; step daughter, Sherry Thomas of Chicago, IL; step son, Carl Thomas and wife Michelle of Hanover, PA; sister, Lynda Smith; brother, Keith “Doug” Cubbage; 6 grandchildren; and special friends, Tracy Spescia and Glenna Kinney; many nieces, nephews cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Garland and Nellie; step mother Elizabeth “Diddy” Sloate, who raised her from infancy; husband William; brothers Clarence “Bunky” and Garland “Gary” Cubbage Jr.; and sister Alice “Babe” Kontz.
Family with receive friends on Tuesday, March 28th, 2023 from 12-2 p.m. at MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME, 136 E. Baltimore Street, Taneytown, MD 21787. A memorial service to celebrate Edie’s life will begin at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Jim Crocker officiating.
