George Allen Smith, Jr.

George Allen Smith, Jr., born on October 19, 1942, in Philadelphia, PA, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2026, at Carroll Lutheran Village after a short battle with Alzheimer’s disease. George’s life was a testament to quiet strength, dedication, and love, leaving a legacy that will be cherished by all who knew him. George was the beloved son of the late George Sr. and Claire (Cochran) Smith and was predeceased by his brother, Ronald. He is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Sharyn, his cherished children, George III & wife Joanne and Robert & wife Samantha, his loving sister, Joyce Ormond, sister-in-law, Jane Bowe, as well as seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy to his life.

After graduating from North Miami Senior High School in 1960, George embarked on a distinguished career with the United States Navy. Serving from 1960 to 1980 as a sonar technician, he rose to the esteemed rank of Master Chief Petty Officer, the highest enlisted rank. George’s commitment to his country and his fellow service members was unwavering and earned him the respect and admiration of all who served alongside him. Following his retirement from the Navy, George channeled his expertise in acoustics into a successful career at Planning Systems, Inc. (PSI) and later, at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab. His work was marked by an unyielding curiosity and a passion for innovation, and he was granted several patents in the field of acoustics.

Beyond his professional achievements, George was a man of many talents and interests. His greatest passion was model trains, which he not only collected, but also repaired for other collectors. A lifelong lover of music, he played the trombone with the Columbia Concert Band for over 30 years. He was an active member of Catonsville United Methodist Church and before that, Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Waldorf.

The family will greet friends at a viewing on September 26, 2026 between 1:00 and 3:00 PM at MacNabb Funeral Home, located at 301 Frederick Road, Catonsville, MD. A short memorial service will follow at 3:00 PM at the MacNabb Funeral Home. Family and friends are invited to gather to honor his memory and the remarkable life he led. A burial will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in George’s memory to support the Carroll Lutheran Village Benevolence Fund or Alzheimer’s research or a charity of your choice, reflecting George’s lifelong generosity and commitment to helping others. George will be remembered for his gentle spirit, his steadfast loyalty, and his profound love for his family.

His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him, and he will be dearly missed.
