Harry Ellsworth Fowler III, 85, of Taneytown, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 30, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on January 11, 1941, Harry was the oldest of ten children and carried throughout his life the sense of responsibility, leadership, and care for others that came with being the eldest sibling. He was a devoted brother to Joyce Jacobs and Raymond Fowler and shared a lifelong bond with his family.
Harry graduated from Bladensburg High School in 1959 and continued his education by attending Frederick Community College for one year before beginning his professional career.
He was the beloved husband of Mary Fowler and a devoted father to Harry Fowler IV and Kevin Fowler. He was a proud grandfather to Amanda Fowler and her fiancé, Matt Bowie, and Kristina Fowler, all of whom brought him immense joy and pride.
At just 18 years old, Harry began his career as a Stationary Engineer with National Geographic Society, where he dedicated more than three decades of service before retiring at the age of 51. His strong work ethic and commitment to excellence were evident throughout his career and in every aspect of his life.
Beyond his profession, Harry devoted 19 years to serving his community as a volunteer firefighter with Carroll Manor in Frederick County, Maryland. Rising through the ranks to become Chief, he exemplified leadership, courage, and selflessness in service to others.
Harry had a remarkable talent for fixing and restoring things. He found great satisfaction in bringing antique furniture back to life through his work with the Frizzellburg Antique Store. Following his retirement, he embraced life as a gentleman farmer, a role he cherished from 1997 until his passing.
A lifelong animal lover, Harry surrounded himself with the creatures he adored. His farm was home to chickens, peacocks, turkeys, and, most recently, geese. He especially loved birds and took great pleasure in caring for them. His appreciation for animals became a lasting gift that he passed on to his children and grandchildren.
Above all else, Harry will be remembered for his unconditional love for his family. He was the person family, friends, and neighbors could always count on, no matter the task or challenge. Whether offering a helping hand, sharing his knowledge, or simply being present when someone needed him, Harry gave freely of himself and asked for little in return. His kindness, generosity, and quiet strength left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Harry's legacy lives on in the values he instilled, the lives he touched, and the love he shared so freely. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his family, friends, and community.
A private visitation for family will be held on Thursday. Burial services will take place on Friday, June 5, 2026, at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
