With the deepest of grief and unending love, we announce the loss of Jennifer Ruth Poutler, who passed away in the early hours of Wednesday June 3rd, 2026, surrounded by her family. Born in Sydney, Australia, on May 2nd, 1937, Jennifer was a quietly determined, fiercely loving, and courageous soul.
A devoted wife, mother, and Nanny, she is survived by her daughter Kerrie Butler, and her husband Daniel Butler, grandchildren Cadance Butler and Liam Butler, and their partners, Alice Butler and Skylar Hess. She is also survived by her brother Peter Black, his wife June Black, as well as numerous nieces and nephews from her three siblings.
The third of four children born to John and Edna Black, both of whom having pre-deceased her, Jennifer enjoyed spending time with her family, going on camping trips, crafting, and working with her father around their house. She dearly loved her siblings, Thelma Elliott (pre-deceased), Hazel Dodds (pre-deceased), and Peter, and remained close to her siblings’ families until her passing.
After graduating from Hurstville High school near the top of her class, she attended secretarial school, before working for various companies in Sydney. She had a strong work ethic and was always a valued member of any team of which she was part. She met her husband David Poulter at a local ball and later married on 1 November 1958. Together, they had three children, Kerrie, Gregory, and Ross Poulter, and spent much of their family life at Goodacre Avenue in the Sutherland Shire. While Jenny stayed home to raise her family, she was always happy to pick up small jobs to supplement the family income. Over the years she bound fishing rods, collated print jobs, and even worked as an election official. In 1981 she began work as an office assistant at RH Foster and Company, where she remained for the next ten years.
Jenny devoted her life to her family. She was very involved in the Miranda North Netball Club, serving as the treasurer for many years. She coached Kerrie’s netball team and led them to several grand final wins. She continued coaching young teams and gained great pleasure playing as a beginner on an adult team. Jenny also participated in Greg and Ross’ sporting and academic life. The family spent several weeks each year vacationing on the South Coast of NSW, enjoying the beaches, fishing and water sports.
Despite enduring tragedy on several occasions in her life, primarily the untimely deaths of Ross in 1983 and Greg (survived by his wife Leanne) in 1994 and then the passing of her husband Dave in 2015, Jenny embraced life and never failed to make everyone she encountered feel loved and special.
Jenny and Dave left Goodacre Avenue and moved to Narrawallee, NSW where they built a home and lived for the next ten years before moving to Berry, NSW. Jenny made new friends wherever she lived and was always a special part of every community, valued for her gentle and caring personality.
Jenny and Dave enjoyed many holidays, traveling throughout Australia and other Pacific Islands. After Dave’s death she took several overseas trips with her friends to Europe, Japan, and North America. However, her favourite place to visit was wherever her grandchildren Cadance and Liam happened to be at any given time. Kerrie and her family were everything to Jenny and she loved them fiercely.
Jenny spent the final few years of her life living in Taneytown, MD where she moved to be closer to Kerrie and Dan. She bought a home in Carroll Vista and quickly immersed herself in many of the activities that take place in the clubhouse. She even studied for and passed her US driving test at the age of 85. A lifelong animal lover, Jenny adopted two kittens, Berry and Tessa, who gave her many hours of pleasure.
Jenny always loved flowers, often featuring them in her art. With this in mind, either flowers or donations in her memory to Bridging Life, the hospice team who cared for her with so much gentleness and dignity, would be equally welcome.
A celebration of life will be held at Carroll Vista Clubhouse, 1 Clubside Drive, Taneytown, MD 21787 at 4 p.m. Friday, June 12, 2026.
