Kurt Fox Oelmann Sr.

April 9, 1933 — January 21, 2026

Finksburg

Kurt was born April 9th, 1933 to parents Max & Irma Oelmann and grew up in Arbutus, Maryland with his younger brother Gary. He graduated from Catonsville High School in Catonsville, Maryland; and the University of Maryland in 1956 with a Degree in Law.

Kurt married Barbara Jane Gorsuch and they had one son, Kurt Jr. in 1967.

Over the years Kurt & Jane attended & hosted many family holiday parties with Jane’s three sisters; their husbands & children. Many of those holiday events are still well-remembered.

Kurt passed the Maryland State Bar exam in 1968 and handled personal Wills and Deeds besides his full-time job at the Maryland State Highway Administration as Chief of Government and Public Utilities. In this position, Kurt applied his extensive knowledge of real estate & law, retiring in 1996.

After the death of his wife Barbara Jane in March 1999, Kurt travelled to Iceland, Scotland, and Italy. Kurt and his son visited Yellowstone Park in 2008, England in 2013, and talked many times of visiting Portugal as well to re-connect.

Kurt visited & stayed with Kurt Jr. in Massachusetts to attend a Jimmy Roselli concert at Foxwoods, Connecticut in 2008.

For most of his life, Kurt owned English Setter hunting dogs and enjoyed hunting grouse & pheasant, making many life-long friends along the way. These trips took him from neighboring Pennsylvania, to Montana, to Drummond Island, Michigan.

Unfortunately, in later years Kurt lacked the stamina to keep a dog due to COPD.

Not discouraged, Kurt still donated to environmental, hunting & conservation clubs, St. Jude’s Hospital, Maryland Public Broadcasting, National Parks, and Wildlife refuges.

Kurt also greatly enjoyed British history & drama series featured on Maryland Public TV, especially Foyle’s War. He also enjoyed Sopranos re-runs, and listening to CDs of Stevie Wonder; Linda Eder; Roy Orbison and Rod Stewart. He also remained a fan of composer James Last.

Kurt also enjoyed the antique car hobby, attending Plymouth Owner’s Club shows with his son.

Kurt is survived by his brother Gary Oelmann of Arbutus, Maryland, and son Kurt Oelmann Jr of Ludlow, Massachusetts.
