Margaret Wickes

September 2, 1946 — January 5, 2026

On Monday January 5th, Margaret (Marge) Smith Wickes peacefully passed away with her family by her side. She was 79 years old, born September 2, 1946 in Carroll County Maryland. Marge was the daughter of the late Fern Leroy and Gertrude Armacost Smith. She was the beloved wife of the late Gordon Frank Wickes, Jr. who passed away in 2014. They shared 42 beautiful years of marriage together.

Marge is survived by her children Leah Wickes Thomas and husband Joe, Ian Randolph Wickes and his wife Carolina; her siblings Lynn Richardson, Randy Smith and his wife Sara; and her grandson Ethan, whom she adored. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she is predeceased by her twin brother Mikey.

Marge graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts. Her passion for art led her to teaching people of all ages and backgrounds. Early on, Marge developed a program called "Creative Awareness" that focused on teaching stretch, meditation and art therapy at Shoemaker House and the Carroll County Detention Center. Later, Marge worked at Summerville assisted living as an Activities Director. She was also the founder and director of "Imagine Art Camp"- a summer camp through Sandymount Elementary. Eventually she retired in 2018 from Copper Ridge where she was the activities coordinator for residents who suffered from Alzheimers and Dementia.

Marge’s main hobby and passion in life centered around acrylic and watercolor painting. Along the way, Marge’s work was shown at the Carroll County Arts Council, Art in the Park and numerous places in and around Carroll County Maryland. Her painting business was Nature's Splendor. Some of her favorite subjects to paint were flowers, nature scenes, and animals. She also enjoyed painting from her husbands photographs that were taken all around the world.

Marge's personality was eclectic, vibrant, fun-loving, cheerful, compassionate, and caring. Without a doubt she was a free- spirit with a huge heart! She always dressed in colorful, matching and mis-matching outfits with funky, fun accessories such as handmade or holiday inspired jewelry. Some of her favorite things in life were her family, friends, lipstick, ice cream, sushi, cats, animals, nature, and hummingbirds.

Above all, Marge was a devout Christian and a long-time member of The Westminster Church of the Brethren. In addition to her church, Marge supported several charities throughout her lifetime and was always willing to help those with special needs or the less fortunate.
