Mary Virginia Johnson, 86, of Carroll Valley, Pennsylvania, passed away on September 24, 2026. She was born on September 23, 1940, in Everett, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of David Spamer and Marjorie (McGraw) Spamer.
Mary was married to William Avey, who preceded her in death in 1959, and later to Harold Patrick Johnson, who preceded her in death in 1995.
Mary was a woman of quick wit and grit. She could make a room laugh with a well-timed remark and had an unmistakable boisterous laugh. She met life's hardships, including losing two husbands, with a toughness that never hardened her heart. Those who knew her would agree she was stubborn, and most would add that it served her well: once Mary made up her mind, there was no changing it. Her faith was the foundation of her life, steady and unshakable through every season.
Mary had a great love for adventure and traveled across the country and the world. She returned from every trip with many stories to tell. Above all, she loved her family. Her greatest legacy lives on in her three daughters, strong women who carry her humor, her strength, and her spirit, and in the generations of grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will continue to tell her stories.
She is survived by her daughters, Sherri Ramsburg, Connie Farner, and Cindy Conklin; her brother, George Spamer; her grandchildren, Michelle, Ashley, Joshua, Michael, Jessica, Zachary, and Jacob; and her great-grandchildren, Jonathan, McKenna, Chase, Cameron, Julian, Maddison, and Alexander, and nephew Nicholas.
In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Elizabeth and Mildred; her brother, David; and her grandson, Christopher.
A viewing will be held on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. and Funeral Service at 1:00 p.m. at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home 210 W. Main Street, Emmitsburg. Interment will follow at Emmitsburg Memorial Cemetery.
