Philip Lynn Dutterer, Sr.

Philip Lynn Dutterer Sr., a devoted father, proud grandfather, caring brother, and loyal friend, passed away peacefully on December 30, 2024, at the age of 79 in his hometown of Westminster, Maryland. Born June 25, 1945, he was the son of the late Nevin and Marylee Dutterer, who operated the Stewart N. Dutterer Flower Shop. 

Philip attended Westminster Senior High School before graduating from Edwards Military Institute in North Carolina. After high school, he proudly served as a Hospital Corpsman in the United States Navy, where his deep passion for caring for others was sparked. Philip later earned his Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) certification and dedicated 43 years to serving patients at various Maryland state hospitals, including Springfield Hospital, Henryton Center, Spring Grove Hospital, Crownsville Hospital, and Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center. His work reflected a lifelong commitment to others. In 1982, Philip married Karen, and together they created a life filled with love, laughter, and family. Karen stood by his side through every challenge, never leaving him until his final breath. 

Philip’s character was defined by his sharp sense of humor, generous heart, and unwavering kindness. He had an innate ability to make others feel valued, always ready with a joke or a helping hand. Philip was also passionate about cars and trains, owning Lynn Performance, where he helped others with their vehicles. His lifelong fascination with steam engines and their beauty and power brought him great joy.

Above all, Philip adored his family. He was a proud father to six children: Marylee Alexander (John) of Littlestown, PA; Philip Dutterer Jr. of Hanover, PA; Jan Zepeda (Nexer) of Westminster, MD; Sarah Inman (Forrest) of Taneytown, MD; Samuel Dutterer (Courtney) of Hanover, PA; and Hannah Dutterer (Brian) of Winchester, VA. His nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren brought him immeasurable joy.

Philip is survived by his siblings: Stewart Dutterer (Bernie) of Green Bay, WI; Mary Dutterer of Hanover, PA; Martha Dutterer of Weston, OR; Dawn Martin (Craig) of Hanover, PA; Aaron Dutterer (Lisa) of Fort Pierce, FL; and Alan Dutterer (Patsy) of Hanover, PA, along with many nieces and nephews who cherished him. Philip will be remembered for his dedication to his career, his profound care for others, and the joy he brought to those around him. His legacy of kindness, humor, and service will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Visitation will be held at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, P.A., 91 Willis Street, Westminster, MD, on January 10, 2025, from 2–4 PM and 6–8 PM. An additional visitation will be held at St. Mark's Church, 1616 Cape Horn Road, Hampstead, MD, from 2–3 PM, followed by a celebration of Philip’s life at 3 PM on January 11, 2025. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Philip’s memory to The Salvation Army, a cause close to his heart, reflecting his values of helping those facing personal hardships, mental illness, and addiction.
