Robert "Bob" M. Preston, born on April 22, 1941, in Darby, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully at his home in Emmitsburg, Maryland, on November 27, 2025, with his loving wife by his side. Bob was the son of the late John Joseph and Teresa Mae (Martin) Preston. Bob was a dedicated educator and community leader, whose impact will be felt for generations to come.
Bob's career was characterized by a commitment to education and service. He served as a Professor of History at Mount St. Mary University from 1968 to 2001, where he inspired countless students with his passion for American history. His leadership extended beyond the classroom; he held the position of Vice President at Trinity University in Washington, D.C., from 2001 to 2005. Additionally, he served as the Mayor of the Town of Emmitsburg from 1982 to 1992, where he worked tirelessly to better his community.
His academic achievements were notable, having earned a Master of Arts in American History from the University of Philadelphia in 1963, followed by a Ph.D. in American History from the Catholic University of Washington, D.C. His scholarly pursuits fueled his teaching, enriching the lives of many and fostering a deep appreciation for history among his students.
Beyond his professional achievements, Bob found joy in simple pleasures. He had a passion for gardening, cultivating beauty in his surroundings, and was an avid reader, consistently seeking knowledge and understanding of the world around him.
Bob is survived by his children: Robert Preston and his wife Theresa of Westminster, MD; Elizabeth Berger and her husband Kurt of Fairfax Station, VA; Virginia Draper and her husband Neil of Frederick, MD; and Margaret Cliber and her husband Joseph of Fairfield, PA. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law Michele Preston of Finksburg, MD, along with 18 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, who will fondly remember him for his guidance, love, and wisdom.
He was predeceased by his son, John Preston, whose memory will be cherished by all who knew him.
