Steve was born on March 5, 1940 in Washington D.C. to Irving James Raley and Rosalie Alice Kennedy Raley. He was raised in Arlington, Virginia with his siblings Alice, Charlie, and Phillip and spent many happy weekends and summers as a child at the family’s Potomac River cottage.
After attending George Washington University, Steve worked for the federal government as a statistician for over 13 years. In 1976, he purchased Berryland Farm in King George, Virginia and through determination, experimentation, and innovation, launched a successful hydroponics business. In 1982, Steve was recruited to serve as an agricultural project manager by an investor from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The family moved to Riyadh where they lived for over two years. While in Riyadh, Steve picked up computer programming as a hobby. In 1984, the family returned to the United States and ultimately relocated to Leonardtown, Maryland where Steve worked for the Department of Defense’s Defense Investigative Service as a computer programmer until his retirement.
Steve lived with a strong Catholic faith and served as a 3rd Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a gifted and award-winning oil-painter. He built intricate model ships. He hand-crafted beautiful wood furniture. Steve also could fix absolutely anything. He had a witty and quick sense of humor. He was a quiet man with a brilliant mind. Most of all, he loved spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren.
Steve is survived by his wife of 56 years, Patricia Mary Kane. Together they had six children: Matthew James Raley, Jennifer Jean Raley Coyne (husband Ned), Michael Edward Raley (wife Amy), Andrew Joseph Raley (wife Katie), Jonathan David Raley (wife Bonnie), and Thomas Patrick Raley (wife Julie), and 15 grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Friday, March 6, from 2-4:00PM, and 6-8:00PM, at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, P.A., 136 E Baltimore St., Taneytown, MD 21787.
