Young Suk Son, age 83, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2023 after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. He was surrounded by his wife, Kim YoSook Son, and daughters Milinda and Jina, and son, Anthony.
Young was born on February 11, 1940, in Jeju Island, South Korea to Bong Son and Cho Kang. His early life in Korea was not easy. He often spoke of the hardship he endured, first living under Japanese colonization, and then through the Korean War. He always held education in the highest regards, and despite the challenges he faced in getting his education, he was proud to have graduated from Jeju Commercial High School in 1961. He continued his education in the United States attending Carroll Community College to obtain his electrician certification and became a master electrician.
Young immigrated to the United States and arrived in Taneytown, Maryland in January 1976. He worked hard to provide for his family until his retirement, often working two or three jobs. He was employed with Gould, Inc. of Westminster (later acquired by Telemechanique) beginning 1976 until the plant’s closing. Later, he was proud to worked supporting the production of the M1 Abrams tank with General Dynamics until his retirement in 2012.
Young was a loyal and loving husband and father. He was married to wife Kim for over 54 years, and father to daughters, Milinda and Jina, and son, Anthony. More recently, his passion was following the lives of his four grandchildren, Tyler, Conor, Gabriel and Maya. He was incredibly proud of them and hearing about their accomplishments. He immigrated to the United States in search of a better life for his family, and he passed knowing that he achieved his “American Dream.”
He is survived by his wife, Kim; daughters, Milinda and Jina (Dave Johnson); son Anthony (Michelle Holmes-Son); grandsons, Tyler, Conor and Gabriel; granddaughter Maya; and numerous brothers and sisters both in the United States and Korea.
He will be cremated and his ashes returned to the place of his birth, Jeju Island.
A celebration of his life and memorial service will be held on Saturday March 11, 2023 at Myers-Durboraw Funeral Homes, 136 East Baltimore Street, Taneytown, Maryland from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
