Obituary

Carolyn K. Starr, 80, of Westminster died at Carroll Hospital Center on September 23, 2021 surrounded by her family. Born December 1, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Howard E. Koontz Jr. and Louise Mehring Koontz Bankert. Carolyn met her late husband, Ronald Joe Starr, on a blind date through a mutual friend. They were married for 52 years.

After teaching in MA, CT, and FL, Carolyn and Joe returned to Westminster to raise their daughter, Erica. She subsequently worked as a bookkeeper for the family business and Carroll Child Care Center.  Carolyn had an engaging sense of humor.  She loved cooking, reading, nature, the beach and travel, with family and friends valued most of all. Especially important were get-togethers with family, WHS 58 and UDel classmates, CCCC lunch bunch, Maple Crest Homemakers, and the Rocky Ridge gals. Her proudest accomplishment was raising her daughter to be a loving, caring, funny and capable woman.

Predeceasing her were her parents, husband, and brother, Howard E. Koontz, III. Surviving are her daughter, Erica Ann Starr, twin sister Ann M. Koontz and husband Vince Smeriglio, sister-in-law Nancy B. Koontz, and nephew, Scott H. Koontz and family.

Services will be private.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Carroll County Arts Council or Maryland Public Television.
