Janet Colburn Obituary

Janet Riley Colburn, 78, of Adamstown, Maryland, formerly of New Windsor, Maryland, died on Tuesday, February 16, 2021 at Buckingham’s Choice.

Born December 11, 1942 in Hanover, PA, she was the daughter of the late Ray D. and Lalia (Scott) Riley.  She was the loving and devoted wife of 52 years to Allen D. Colburn.

Janet graduated from Westminster High School class of 1960, Hood College in 1964, and went on to get a Master’s in Education from Western MD College in 1972, and a Master’s in Library Science from University of MD College Park in 1979.  Spending a brief career in education, Janet went on to an over 30 year career as a librarian at the Westminster branch of the Carroll County public library system.  She was instrumental in adding a genealogy section to the library specific to Carroll County’s family histories.  She was an active member and past-regent of the D.A.R., member and founder of the Carroll County Genealogical Society, former board member of Carroll Community College (received an honorary Doctorate degree for her many years of service as a board member).  She was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in New Windsor.

Surviving in addition to her husband Allen are son, Keith Colburn and wife Lisa of Ellicott City; daughter, Amy Cook and husband Theodore of Severn; grandchildren, Ethan Colburn, Elizabeth, Sarah, Benjamin and Rachel Cook; brother, Arthur Riley and wife Vickie of Westminster; sisters, Marjorie Lohnes and husband Fredric of Westminster and Donna R. Riley of Westminster; and several nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 20, 2021 at St. Paul's U.C.C., corner of Bond and Green Street in Westminster, with the Rev. Marty Kuchma officiating.  Burial will follow in the Westminster Cemetery. Friends and family may visit from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church.  Due to pandemic, face masks and social distancing will be required while in the church.  The services will be live-streamed for those unable to attend at (https://www.facebook.com/MDFHWestminster).  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (alzfdn.org).  Arrangements have been entrusted to the MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME in Westminster.
