John Atkinson Obituary

On Thursday, September 8th, John Edgar Atkinson, 70, passed away at his home in Tyrone, Maryland, of cancer. He was born October 15th, 1951 in Olney, Maryland to the late Preston L. Atkinson and Ethel C. (Reed) Atkinson. He graduated from Damascus High School in 1969. He was a manager at Grants Department Store and also several car maintenance and body shops. In 1978 he formed a partnership with his brother and longtime friend Joe Wright, to create A&W Cabinetry in Tyrone, MD. creating fine furniture, custom cabinetry, and restoration millwork. When the shop closed in 1996, he went to work for the business that purchased the property, Compressor Maintenance Company, and worked as a compressor service and installation technician until his retirement at 70, in October of 2021.

In August of 1993, he married Susan Elizabeth (Brose) Kruszewski, of Tyrone, MD where they lived and raised four children. John was an avid hunter, loved working on cars, specializing in VW's and cars from the 50's and 60's. He enjoyed restoring antique clocks, making furniture for his wife, and creating Pinewood Primitives for his wife's business, Seasonal Expressions Art at the Carroll County Farmers Market for over a decade. Quick to lend a hand, and help those around him, he was devoted to his family and especially his grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law Kenneth R. Amoss, and in-laws Franklin P. and Virginia Hering Brose. He is survived by his wife, Susan, their four children and their spouses, Jayson A. and Jacklynn Kruszewski, Jennifer A. Kruszewski, Sarah E. and Keith Zeiler and grandson Carson W. Zeiler, and Sean E. Atkinson, his sister Alma L. Amoss, brother Randy L. and Susan Atkinson, sister- and brother-in-law Martha H. and H. Wain Swapp, and several nieces and nephews.

There will be a Celebration of Life ceremony, by invitation only, in October. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution may send donations to Bridging Life Hospice or Shepherd's Staff Back to School program, both in Westminster, MD, or the charity of one's choice.
