Sister Maria Cincotta Obituary

Sister Maria (Anna Maria) Cincotta, age 88, died at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg, Maryland on March 31, 2020.  She was born on April 5, 1931 in Frederick, Maryland to Mary Louise (Flook) and Anthony Joseph Cincotta.   

Sister Maria graduated from Brunswick High School in Brunswick, Maryland in 1948 and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from St. Joseph College, Emmitsburg, Maryland in 1952.  In 1967 she earned a Master of Arts Degree from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.   From an early age, Sister Maria showed a love and appreciation for music, beauty, and literature.  She shared these gifts and talents with her Sisters in Community and all those she served. 

On January 26, 1955, she joined the Daughters of Charity in Emmitsburg. After a period of initial formation, she served as a teacher at the following schools:  Seton High School, Endicott, New York (1956-1967); Seton High School, Baltimore (1967-1982); Immaculate Conception Academy, Washington, D.C. (1982-1984); All Saints High School, Washington, D.C. (1984-1989); and Elizabeth Seton High School, Bladensburg, Maryland (1989-1993).   Sister Maria then served in outreach at St. Cyprian’s Parish in Georgetown, South Carolina (1993-1995) and in Pastoral Care at DePaul Medical Center, Norfolk, Virginia (1995-1996).   Sister was then missioned to St. Ann’s Infant Home, Hyattsville, Maryland to serve first as a teacher and tutor and then as a receptionist (1996-2006).  She then returned to Elizabeth Seton High School in Bladensburg as a tutor and coordinator for work study (2006-2014).  In 2014 she went to Villa St. Michael and served in the Ministry of Prayer until her death.  

She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her brothers, Dr. Anthony Joseph Cincotta, Jr. (Estelle), Sam Cincotta (Robyn), and Carl Cincotta, a stepmother, Jeannette Cincotta, nieces and nephews, and her Sisters in community.     

A private wake and Mass will be held in the Villa Chapel in Emmitsburg.  Burial will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Emmitsburg.  Arrangements have been entrusted to the MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Sister Maria’s name to the Daughters of Charity, 4330 Olive Street, Saint Louis, Missouri 63108.
