W. Robert "Bob" Flickinger Obituary

William Robert “Bob” Flickinger, 88, resident of Taneytown, Maryland, passed away on Friday morning, January 1, 2021 at Lorien Taneytown from complications of Covid pneumonia.

He was born on December 3, 1932 in Tyrone, Maryland, the son of the late William K. and Hilda M. (Zepp) Flickinger.  He was married on June 30, 1957 to Fairy Louise (Frock) Flickinger, his loving and devoted wife of 63 years.

Bob served his country in the U.S. Army from 1955-58, and was in the Army Security Agency, Formosa.  He had a 26 year career with Random House, Inc. in Westminster, retiring in 1993.  Bob was a very active member of Grace U.C.C. in Taneytown and especially enjoyed helping with the Grace United Learning Center, and was well known by the kids and staff as “Mr. Bob”.  Bob had a long history of service to his beloved community Taneytown.  He served as Mayor of the City of Taneytown for three terms (78-79, 95-99 and 03-07), Taneytown City councilman for over 16 years, and was inducted into the Municipal League Hall of Fame in 1997 for having served more than 20 years in public office.  Bob was very active in the Taneytown Lions Club, serving twice (77-78, 96-97) as club president, was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, and most recently the District 22-W Honor Roll Award (46 years perfect attendance), and a life membership in Lions International.  Bob was a former member of the Taneytown Jaycees, former member and chairman of the Carroll County Commission on Aging, Carroll County Parks and Recreation Council, Gettysburg Antique Car Association (1970 Mustang convertible and 1967 Ford Galaxy, were his prize cars), and Carroll County Historical Society.  For many years Bob headed up the mulching project in all of Taneytown City parks, assisting middle and high school students with their community service credits.  Bob was also an associate with the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home beginning in 2003 with the then Skiles Funeral Home, and could often be seen working the door at the Taneytown funeral home greeting friends and family of loved ones.  He was fond of flower and vegetable gardening, and enjoyed planting trees.

Surviving Bob in addition to his wife Fairy, are daughter, Judith Ann “Judy” Greenholt Roberts and husband Glenn of Bethany Beach, DE; son, Blaine Allen Flickinger and wife Karen of New Windsor; grandsons, Keith Greenholt and wife Julie of Pittsburgh, PA, Kyle Greenholt and wife Maryann of York, PA, and Sean Flickinger and wife Amanda, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps stationed in Hawaii; sisters, Doris Eckard of Littlestown, PA, and Jean Berwager of Taneytown.  He is also survived by 5 step-grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and numerous step-great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son-in-law, Jeffrey Greenholt.

Due to pandemic restrictions, a private funeral service for the family will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 3, 2021 at the MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME in Taneytown (for those unable to attend, services will be livestreamed via the funeral home’s Facebook page at (https://www.facebook.com/MDFHWestminster).  Private burial with military honors will follow at Grace UCC Cemetery in Taneytown.      

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the City of Taneytown c/o: “Robert Flickinger Fund” (designated for planting trees in Taneytown parks); Grace United Learning Center; or to Taneytown Lions Club.
