William Steo Obituary

William Anthony “Bill” Steo, 95, of Emmitsburg, MD, died on Saturday, October 3, 2020 at his home, with his family at his side.  Born June 13, 1925 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late John Sebastian and Theresa (Carucci) Steo.  He was the devoted husband of Shirley (Merkiel) Steo, to whom he was married for 62 years.

Bill was a graduate of Regis High School in New York City, where he attended on a four-year scholarship. After graduating high school he was accepted as a seminarian in the order of the Society of Jesus where he earned a B.A. degree in philosophy from Woodstock College near Baltimore, MD. After seven years of training he decided to return to secular life to teach theology and philosophy.  He earned a B.A. degree in philosophy from Woodstock College near Baltimore, MD, a Master’s degree in philosophy from Fordham University in New York City, and he completed all work toward a PH. D. in philosophy there.  He taught philosophy at the University of Detroit, and theology at Dunbarton College in Washington, D.C. He wrote for and was managing editor for various newspapers and magazines.  Bill was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Emmitsburg.  He enjoyed writing and painting in oil colors.

Surviving, in addition to his beloved wife Shirley, are children, Austin Steo of Emmitsburg, Leah Huston of VA, and Mark Steo and wife Jane of Washington, D.C.; 13 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by a son, Damian Steo.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 17, 2020 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 47 DePaul St., Emmitsburg, MD, with the Rev. Martin McGeough, C.M. as celebrant.  Burial will follow at New St. Joseph Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the mass on Saturday.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home in Emmitsburg. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Care Net Pro-Life Pregnancy Center of Frederick, 707 N. Market St., Frederick, MD 21701.
