I worked with Sonny at McDaniel. He helped me many times with all sorts of things when I worked on the I.T. Help Desk and had to reach out to Physical Plant for help. He was someone you could count on. I am sorry to hear he is gone.

Sonny, truly one of the most loyal and talented individuals I ever had the pleasure to work with at WMC/McDaniel. There was never a job or call for help that he didn't respond to. I especially remember him on snow days as he often caught me struggling to walk into Harrison House. He was always, always working. All the events from small lectures to Commencements succeeded because of his attention to details. He also aided me and photographers to the highest peaks (Big Baker, Alumni Hall, and Gill Center to name a few) so we could get the best campus views.

He deserved to retire yet I was saddened to learn of his fall and the injuries which
prevented him from enjoying these last two years. It was my honor to know him and call him a friend.

I was sorry when Sonny retired from McDaniel a few years ago (though no one could deny he'd more than earned some relaxation), and I am sorrier still to hear of his passing. I admired Sonny and always welcomed his cheerful help, whatever the task. Years ago--after the renovation of Memorial/Hill Hall--he understood how eager I was to get my desk back up to my second floor office. He carried my huge, heavy wooden desk up the stairs on his back. (The elevator was not yet operative.) Sonny represented all that was kind and community-serving about WMC/McDaniel, and we on the Hill were lucky to have his presence among us for more than forty years.

I first met Sonny when I worked at the grounds crew while a student at Western MD. College, Sonny was quick witted and as hard working a guy as I have ever met. His many thousands of hours working at WCC/McDaniel made our college better, people's jobs easier and our campus nicer looking.
Whether he was moving reams of paper, plowing snow or just driving around campus in his silver "Sanford & Son " pick up truck,, Sonny always had a kind word and a friendly greeting for everyone. Thanks to a man who made a difference through his dedication to his job and our school.

I am so saddened by this news. I shared a word with Sonny in the mornings when he was clearing walkways in winter, or pulling weeds, or helping to make the campus beautiful. I tried to always thank him for his work of making the campus beautiful for our students, and hope he heard me say so. I am sorry for his family in this loss. We miss him.
