Marlin Harold “Jake” Hiner, Sr., 88, of Taneytown, MD died on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at his home.  Born August 20, 1929 in Carroll County, he was the son of the late Roy and Mamie (Humbert) Hiner.  He was the devoted husband of Shirley (Styers) Hiner, to whom he was married for more than 61 years.

Jake worked as a Building Supervisor for Carroll County Public Schools at Francis Scott Key High School for more than 33 years, retiring in 1992.  He also was an owner/operator of a school bus for over 20 years.  He enjoyed cutting the grass, caring for his lawn, and gardening.  He was an accomplished Dobro player and played over the years with several local bluegrass bands.  He also enjoyed collecting musical instruments.

Surviving, in addition to his beloved wife Shirley, are sons, Marlin “Jay” Hiner, Jr. and wife Barbara of Taneytown, Mark Hiner and wife Sharon of Westminster, Jeff Hiner and wife Lori of Taneytown, and Gregory Hiner also of Taneytown; sisters, Iona Sipes and husband Richard of Westminster, and Janice Shipley of Westminster; 7 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by brothers William and Roland Hiner, and a sister, Leona Ward.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME, 136 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown, MD with the Rev. Fred Horner and Pastor Darrell Davis officiating.  Burial will follow at Pleasant Valley Cemetery.  The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, January 23 at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jake’s name to the Taneytown Volunteer Fire Company, 39 E. Baltimore St., Taneytown, MD, 21787.
